Jodhpur is the capital of what used to be the Marwar kingdom. It is the gateway to the Great Indian Thar desert.
Around Jodhpur: The kingdom of Marwar stretches across present-day Barmer, Jalore, Jodhpur, Nagaur and Pali districts. Large parts of this district are sandy and drought-prone. The ecology of the Thar desert is fragile; and water is a precious commodity. However, the Thar is densely populated for a desert. The terrain is characterised by dry scrub; and there is farming as well as herding activity. A wide range of traditional crafts are also practised.
The city of Jodhpur: Jodhpur, the capital, was founded by Rao Jodha in the mid-1400's, and continues to retain its medieval feel. The city is dominated by Mehrangarh Fort, arguably the most impressive and interesting fort in all of Rajasthan. Below the fort, the markets of Jodhpur are vibrant and chaotic; reflecting not just the the multi-cultural composition of its people but also Jodhpur's long history as a trading centre.
